DEFINITIONS:
Database: Application software used to quickly search and retrieve information or data that has been collected and specially organized. (Telephone listing/guide, school management system)
Geographic information system (GIS): A database in which the data is presented in the form of some kind of map. They are used to hold grid references, street addresses, or postcodes; and then to show a street at the right location.
Database management system (DBMS): Is the term for programs that handle the storage, modification and retrieval of data, as well as controlling who has access to the information. (Microsoft Access/ Excel, Lotus Approach…)
Files: The way databases are organized in; a collection of data that has been given a name.
Records: Series of fields. Lots of records form a field.
Field: An item of information, referring to a record of a certain file.
Field name: The name of each field.

Data held about people can be incorrect
